El autor John Maxwell dice que "todo sube o cae por el liderazgo". Y, es cierto, muéstrame una organización, negocio o familia exitosa y te mostraré un liderazgo exitoso. Y esto se debe a que el liderazgo en cualquier área es lo que más determina el éxito o el fracaso. Ahora, humildemente te pido que me permitas agregarle esto a lo que Maxwell dijo, “y cada líder sube o cae por su actitud”. Como líder cristiano, después de convertirte en un seguidor de Jesús, nada puede ser más importante que tu actitud. Tu actitud te causará bien o mal, te sanará o te hará daño, te dará seguidores o te dará enemigos, te dará éxito o te llevará al fracaso.

Cuando hablamos de “la actitud correcta” la tendencia es de verlo dentro del contexto de una actitud buena o mala, o una actitud positiva o negativa. Pero la verdad es que los líderes atravesarán tiempos buenos y malos, tiempos positivos y negativos. Sin embargo, lo que te mantendrá liderando de manera exitosa es tener una actitud HUMILDE. Piensa por un momento, ¿Verdad que no fue la actitud positiva de Jesús lo que causó que diese su vida por nosotros? Más bien fue su actitud de humildad lo que permitió que el Creador del mundo fuese crucificado por lo creado. Por supuesto que es importante tener una actitud positiva, pero cuando lleguen los momentos verdaderamente difíciles, no va a ser tu positivismo lo que te va a ayudar a salir adelante, va a ser tu humildad.

Tengan la misma ACTITUD que tuvo Cristo Jesús. Aunque era Dios, no consideró que el ser igual a Dios fuera algo a lo cual aferrarse. En cambio, renunció a sus privilegios divinos; adoptó la humilde posición de un esclavo y nació como un ser humano. Cuando apareció en forma de hombre, se humilló a sí mismo en obediencia a Dios y murió en una cruz como morían los criminales. – Filipenses 2: 5-8 NTV

Definiendo la humildad:

Si buscas la definición de humildad en la mayoría de los diccionarios, encontrarás que la palabra humilde se utiliza para definir humildad. Por ejemplo, se define la humildad como, “la calidad o el estado de ser humilde”. Bueno, eso no nos ayuda mucho. La palabra humildad tiene su origen en la palabra griega humilis, que simplemente significa "bajo". Y esto es exactamente lo que hizo Jesús, se rebajó a sí mismo, bajó del cielo no como rey, sino como sirviente y lo hizo de esa manera para ganarse nuestra confianza. Porque la humildad, como lo ejemplifica Jesús, es vivir tu vida con un propósito más grande que tú mismo. Por esto la humildad es el fundamento de la actitud correcta en el liderazgo.

Desarrollando Humildad :

No nacemos humildes, todo lo contrario, cuando nacemos somos extremadamente egoístas. Si tenemos hambre, estamos cansados, tenemos frío o calor, simplemente comenzamos a llorar y buscar atención sin ningún tipo de consideración por los demás. Por lo tanto, la humildad es algo que tendremos que desarrollar.

La humildad es parte de tu actitud, y una actitud de humildad se desarrolla a través del hábito de:

1. Concientizarte en cuanto a ti mismo para convertirte en un líder humilde, necesitarás saber quién eres y quién no eres. Y vas a necesitar conocer cuáles son tus talentos y habilidades y para qué fuiste diseñado por Dios.

Los prudentes saben a dónde van, en cambio, los necios se engañan a sí mismos. – Proverbios 14: 8 NKJ

Una vez que entiendes quién eres y quién no eres, y una vez que descubras cuáles son tus talentos y habilidades es cuando puedes comenzar a tener una actitud de humildad en el liderazgo. Es cuando comienzas a analizar quién eres y lo que tienes y cómo puedes ser útil para un propósito mayor que tú mismo.

2. La mansedumbre es estar consciente de que no eres el centro de tu vida. Es la disciplina de vivir tu vida considerando a los demás como más importantes que tú. Ahora bien, la mansedumbre no significa que pienses menos de ti, sino que pienses menos en ti y más en los demás. La mansedumbre está en desarrollar el hábito de usar quién eres y lo que tienes para el beneficio de los demás.

¿Quién es sabio y entendido entre ustedes? Que lo demuestre con su buena conducta, mediante obras hechas con la humildad que le da su sabiduría. – Santiago 3:13 NVI

3. Misión la humildad se desarrolla al vivir la misión para la cual Dios te creó, el guiar a las personas a una relación creciente con Jesús. Cumplir tu misión no puede lograrse sin humildad. Habrá buenos y malos tiempos. No obstante, lo que te ayudará a evitar que te enorgullezcas en tiempos de éxito será la humildad que proviene al estar comprometido de lleno a la misión. De igual manera, lo que te ayudará a mantenerte en pie en los tiempos malos no será necesariamente una actitud positiva, sino una actitud de humildad, la cual es inherente a la vida de aquellos líderes comprometidos con una misión más grande que ellos mismos.

Jesús se acercó entonces a ellos y les dijo: —Se me ha dado toda autoridad en el cielo y en la tierra. Por tanto, vayan y hagan discípulos de todas las naciones, bautizándolos en el nombre del Padre y del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo, enseñándoles a obedecer todo lo que les he mandado a ustedes. Y les aseguro que estaré con ustedes siempre, hasta el fin del mundo.

Author John Maxwell says that, “everything rises or falls on leadership.” Show me a successful organization, business or family and I will show you successful leadership. The reason being is that leadership in any area and more than anything else determines success and failure. Now, I humbly ask that you allow me to add that, every leader rises and falls on their attitude. As a Christian leader next to becoming a follower of Jesus nothing can be more important than your attitude. Your attitude will make or break you, will heal or hurt you, will birth you followers or give you enemies, will birth success or lead you to failure.

The tendency is to talk about “the right attitude” in the context of a good and bad attitude or a positive or negative attitude. But the truth is that leaders will go through good and bad times, positive and negative times. What will keep you successfully leading is having a HUMBLE attitude. You see it wasn’t Jesus’ positive attitude that saw him through the crucifixion it was his attitude of humility that allowed the creator of the world to be hung on a cross by the created. Of course, it’s important to have a positive attitude but when push comes to shove, it’s not your positivism that will see you through, it will be your humility.

You must have the same ATTITUDE that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the HUMBLE position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he HUMBLED HIMSELF in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. – Philippians 2: 5-8 NLT

Defining Humility:

If you look up the meaning of humility in most dictionaries you’ll find that they use the word humble to define humility. For example, they define humility, as the quality or state of being humble. Well that’s not very helpful. The word humility has its origins in the Greek word humilis, which simply means, “low.” And that is exactly what Jesus did, He lowered himself, He came down from heaven not as a king but as a servant and not just for the sake of being down to earth. He did so in order to gain our trust. Because humility as exemplified by Jesus is, to live your life for a purpose greater than yourself.

Developing Humility :

We’re not born humble, quite the opposite when we’re born we’re extremely selfish. If we’re hungry, tired, cold, or hot we just start crying out for attention with absolutely no regard for anyone else. Therefore, humility is something that we’ll need to develop.

Humility is all about attitude, and an attitude of humility is developed through the habit of:

1. Self-awareness To become a humble leader you’re going to need to know who you are and who you are not. And, you’re going to need to know your talents and abilities and what you were designed to do best.

The wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way, But the folly of fools is deceit. – Proverbs 14:8 NKJ

Once you understand who you are and who you are not and once you understand your talents and abilities that is when humility happens, when you start to analyze how you can be useful for a purpose greater than yourself.

2. Meekness the awareness that it is not all about you, the discipline of living your life considering others as more important than yourself. Now, meekness does not mean that you think less of yourself it means that you think less about yourself and more about others. Meekness is developing the habit of using who you are and what you have for the benefit of others.

Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom. – James 3:13 NIV

3. Mission humility is developed through the living out of your God inspired mission to lead people in a growing relationship with Jesus. Fulfilling your mission cannot be accomplished without humility. There will be good times and bad times. What will help keep you from developing pride in the good times will be the humility that comes from understanding and being committed to your mission. And, what will keep you going in the bad times will not necessarily be a positive attitude, but rather the humility that is inherent in the life of those leaders who are committed to a mission greater than themselves.

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Humility

It all begins with an idea.

The leader’s passion and goal is to succeed; to make things better and to do them better. The most effective leaders are not motivated by glory, they’re motivated by progress. Research shows that the most successful leaders are humble leaders. Humble leaders have more, influence, they attract more followers, they earn more loyalty, confidence, respect and achieve more progress than those who rely upon their pride. It’s interesting that when we think of great leadership qualities usually the first thing that comes to mind are talents, abilities, charisma and tenacity. But the truth is that humble leaders are the most effective leaders.

The Humble Leader

The great Martin Luther once said, “If you have nothing worth dying for, you’ve got nothing worth living for.” A humble leader is always driven by a cause or purpose greater than him or herself. A cause and a purpose that the leader is not only willing to live for but also to live out his or her life for. No other leader exemplifies humble leadership more than Jesus Christ. It was his greatest asset. When the Apostle Paul summed up Jesus’ life and ministry the attribute that he found most impressive was not Jesus’ knowledge or miracle-working power. The attribute that most impressed Paul was Jesus’ humility.

The Apostle Paul: ” (Jesus) Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name …” - Philippians 2:6-9 NIV

Becoming a Humble Leader

As leaders the apostle Paul commands us; “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus…” – Philippians 2:3-5 NIV

No matter how gifted or talented you are you’ll not achieve your fullest potential as a leader without developing a humble attitude. Here are some mindsets you can make a part of your leadership practices that will turn you into a humble leader.

Humble leaders have a serving attitude. They understand that the key to successful leadership is to possess the ability to influence others. They understand that influence increases or decreases according to the level of the relationship. The weaker the relationship the weaker the ability to influence. The stronger the relationship the greater the ability to influence. Humble leaders understand that the best way to build a strong relationship is by seeking opportunities to serve others. The better you serve, the better the relationship. The better the relationship, the more the influence. The more the influence, the greater the leadership success

Humble leaders have an attitude of appreciation. They understand that people are more productive when their work is appreciated. In a recent study, a researcher randomly divided university fund-raiser employees into two groups. Each group worked independently of the other. The researcher instructed the director of fund-raising to express gratitude to one group and not to the other. By week’s end, the workers who had heard the message of appreciation made 50% more calls than those who did not.

Humble leaders have a work-on-themselves-first attitude. They understand that humility leads to growth and that arrogance is an impediment to growth. Arrogant leaders love to work on others. But humble leaders prioritize working on themselves first. And working on themselves more than they work on others. They understand that the better they become as leaders, the better the people around them will become.

As a leader ask yourself:

  1. How can you best serve the people you lead?

  2. Are you consistently expressing your appreciation to those you lead? How can you specifically express appreciation to them?

  3. What have you done to better yourself as a leader over the previous 90 days?
